Hello Nicole, Welcome to Nawras. We would like to know about your journey as an artist.
How do you Started as an artist
I am a self taught visual artist working primarily with ink and water colours. First exhibiting my work in the Walk The Art Exhibition at the Living Arts Center in Mississauga (2006), I discovered the importance of connecting to my passion for creating and sharing my work with others.A little encouragement went a very, very long way.
What does your work aim to say
I have always used art as a tool to express what words could not. Art as a visual language has always served as a form of healing and self exploration. I hope to connect with others through the things I create. If my art said anything, I would hope it would be “look at me and try to feel it within you?”
Who are your biggest influences
I have been inspired by surreal artist Stephen Mackey’s dream-like quality of his work, Klaus Voormann’s illustrations of music and Jungi, It’s powerful use of illustration in his storytelling. My inspiration does not stop with the visual arts as I find inspiration in books and music as well. I love seeing how the visual arts come together with music and literature. Musical acts that become essentially performance art with powerful visuals and free verse poetry that takes on a new structure and is printed on a page.
How have you developed your career
Through connecting with other creatives, collectives and creative initiatives. Community has always played a large role for me and what I do- in and outside of art.I had to ask myself “What does success mean to me” and really know. Truly know.Someone else’s version of success did not fit me.
How do you connect with artists
It is important to connect with the creative community. Attending events, joining facebook groups, answering calls to artists, enjoying art shows, supporting local creative initiatives be it art, music or poetry. Where we can’t find any opportunities, create them. Make it happen.
Which current art world trends are you following
I appreciate and explore every artwork but it doesn’t always mean I am in touch with what is trending. I pay attention to the things that speak to me and really inspires me.
What do you think of Nawras Art Gallery’s potential
I think it is a great service for helping artists sell their work internationally. Simple, straight forward, with a fair commission.
Thank you Nicole for such an inspiring interaction, hope it will help our Artists and viewers.
